Holistic Physical Therapy
At Orchard Physical Therapy + Coaching, I specialize in providing holistic physical therapy for active adults in the Bend, OR community and beyond.
Healing is about more than simply treating the injured tissue.
You’ve been progressing through the medical system, but something feels like it’s missing.
Maybe you’ve felt:
Your pain or symptoms have been dismissed by your provider
Discouraged by chronic or ongoing pain
Overwhelmed by the fast pace of health care appointments
A disconnect between the narrow focus on your pain or symptoms and the bigger picture of who you are as a person and what matters to you
Frustrated, like the answer must be to push harder or be more consistent with your home program
If so, you’re not alone and you’re in the right place.
My approach to holistic physical therapy integrates whole-person care, supporting your body to heal while weaving in practices for mind-body connection, nervous system support, trauma informed care, and a focus on well-being because I believe you deserve to move in ways that feel good to you and experience joy…even (especially) when you’re healing from an injury or chronic pain.
Acute and chronic neck, mid-back, and low back pain
Postural pain or dysfunction
Acute strains and sprains
Muscle pain, tenderness, tightness, and weakness patterns
Acute and chronic shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, and/or foot pain or instability
Post-surgery recovery and/or persistent pain after shoulder, foot and ankle, fracture stabilization, or total joint replacement surgery
Unpredictable pain or flare-ups
Pain that moves around
Fear of movement after injury
Common holistic physical therapy issues & people I treat:
Have ever thought that they just need to push themselves harder in order to get better
Are looking for care that feels calm, compassionate, and attuned to their pace, especially when they’re feeling overwhelmed, unsure, or in a flare-up
Want physical therapy that integrates lifestyle factors, the nervous system, and the mind-body connection to understand what shapes their pain, recovery, and mental well-being
Are ready to take ownership of their healing journey and want a guide to support and empower them along the way
Value one-on-one care and a trauma-informed approach that honors the pace of their nervous system
My approach to holistic PT is best received by people who…
What is Holistic Physical Therapy?
And, how is it different from traditional PT?
Traditional physical therapy often approaches treatment of an injury from a narrow lens, focused on the tissue or joint that has pain, without zooming out to take in you as a whole person.
Holistic physical therapy integrates the body, mind, emotions, nervous system, and support structures into care knowing that these factors influence health, healing, and well-being.
The care you receive with holistic physical therapy looks and feels different for many reasons including:
Longer treatment sessions
A whole-person approach
Mind-body connection and nervous system support
Trauma-informed care
Focus on well-being vs fixing
Longer Treatment Sessions
In traditional physical therapy practices, you are often seen by a physical therapist for about 30 minutes.
In my holistic PT practice, we get much more time together with your first session lasting up to 75 minutes and follow-up sessions lasting up to 60 minutes.
These longer physical therapy sessions allow us more time to collaborate on your treatment, getting clear on what’s important to you, what you hope to take from your session, where you might be coming up against a barrier in your home program or progress, and what kind of support you need to navigate the challenges.
At the end of the day, my hope is this time allows you to feel seen, heard, validated, and empowered while making progress toward your goals.
A Whole-Person Approach
You are a whole person and your story, symptoms, and goals all matter to me.
When your symptoms began is just as important to me as understanding what was happening in your life when you started noticing them.
There may be times that we talk about:
Lifestyle factors like nutrition, hydration, sleep, stress, and your environment
Your preferred movement practices and why they are important to you
How your symptoms are impacting your work, social engagement, and relationships
As all of these factors relate to and impact your health, healing, and well-being.
In addition, your sessions will be tailored to you and your needs. They may include:
Hands-on treatment (massage, cupping, scraping, joint mobilizations)
Strengthening exercises
Movement re-education
Mobility work
Nervous system support practices
Mind–Body Connection and Nervous System Support
With a holistic physical therapy approach to treatment, we incorporate the mind-body connection.
Your mind and body are not two separate entities. Rather, they are an integrated system with treatment of your physical body having an impact on your mental and emotional body and visa versa.
The integration of nervous system support is important because your brain and nervous system are wired for safety; they are constantly scanning your external and internal environment for danger. When danger is sensed and assessed to be a threat to your safety, they will output a protective response like pain, fatigue, overwhelm, anxiety, or some other protective reaction.
Increasing interoceptive (sensing what you’re feeling in your body) and emotional (naming emotions and sensing where they are in your body) awareness is also incorporated into holistic PT sessions through:
Body scans
Breathwork
Postural re-education
Mobility practices
Strengthening and movement re-education exercises
Hands-on work
To help you connect to your body and what you’re feeling on a deeper level.
Additionally, interoceptive and emotional awareness practices help you create an understanding of how sensations show up in your body and help you create more flexibility and adaptability within your nervous system, which supports your healing and pain recovery.
Trauma-Informed Care
Trauma-informed care is integral to your holistic physical therapy experience.
Trauma-informed care empowers you and gives you agency in how you experience your PT sessions.
With a trauma-informed approach you:
Can choose if the treatment room door is open or closed.
Are invited to orient to the space and know where things, like tissues, are located should you need them.
Are given options within each treatment session.
Can request a different approach, a different movement pattern, or a change in pressure with hands on treatment.
Are asked for consent before any form of touch.
Focus on Well-Being vs. Fixing
Holistic PT is focused on promoting a greater sense of well-being.
Even while you’re healing from an acute injury or navigating chronic pain treatment and recovery, we can maximize supporting the body’s self-healing abilities through whole-person treatment, mind-body connection, and nervous system support.
This shift in focus leads to less urgency to “fix” in favor of a deeper sense of self-compassion, confidence, and well-being, knowing that even when aspects of injury or pain persist, you can continue to engage in life in a way that brings meaning, purpose, and joy.

FAQs
Holistic PT
-
During your first session, you will have time to share your story, what brought you to physical therapy, how your pain, symptoms, or injury are impacting you and your life.
We’ll talk about your goals for physical therapy and what you hope to get out of this first session.
Then, we’ll shift into looking at how you’re moving (walking, squatting, balancing, reaching, twisting, etc), your strength, your joint and soft tissue mobility to come up with a plan.
There will also be time for treatment during the first session targeted at what will be most impactful. Treatment might include hands-on therapy (massage, cupping, scraping, joint mobilizations), strengthening exercises, mobility practices, and/or nervous system support.
-
No, you don’t.
But, it is helpful if you’re open and curious about this approach and interested in what might shift, change, or open up for you through a holistic physical therapy approach.
-
Yes!
With holistic PT, we are looking through a different lens and incorporating aspects of your lifestyle and well-being that are often overlooked in traditional PT settings.
If you can come to holistic physical therapy sessions with a mindset of curiosity and willingness to try some treatment approaches that are new to you, you are in a great place to make change and progress.
-
It depends…I know, I know, this is the worst answer ever, but it truly does because each and every person and symptoms are different and require different support between sessions.
That said, I do always strive to keep your program simplified to the tools that will have the biggest impact.
You will receive a personalized program organized to allow you to progress through the exercises and/or practices in a way that will support your body’s self-healing abilities.
-
Yes, we absolutely will incorporate exercise, strengthening, and hands-on work.
All of your treatment sessions are tailored specifically to you to support your progress toward your goals.
Every session you will have space to share what you’d like to focus on or what’s important for us to include in your treatment session.
You are at the center of your treatment and I come in with the tools (exercise, strengthening, hands-on work, nervous system support, etc) to support and guide your process.

My work is rooted in orthopedic physical therapy, but my approach is shaped by the understanding that pain and healing are not just physical, they’re also shaped by our nervous system, emotions, stress, and lived experience.
I draw on training in coaching, nervous system support, trauma-informed care, and pain science to offer support that treats the whole person.
I believe the highest care is delivered in a one-on-one setting, so you’ll see me for each treatment and will never be passed off to an aide or tech throughout the course of your care.
All treatments take place in a private treatment studio.
-
No, you don’t!*
Oregon is a “Direct Access” state meaning you do not need to see a physician prior to being seen for PT.
If, upon working together, I believe you need to be seen by a physician, I will refer you to one.
*Note: Some insurance companies/plans require a physician referral or prescription for coverage of physical therapy services. It is always in your best interest to contact your insurance to determine your specific PT coverage.
